Last time the U.S. Open was played at Pinehurst: June 16-19, 2005

In 2005, Michael Campbell won his first and only major championship at Pinehurst No 2. He did so by shooting a final round score of 69, one under par. He was able to hold off Tiger Woods who was in his prime, coming off of a Masters victory earlier in the season, and who also shot a final round score of 69. Two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen began Sunday with a three shot lead at three under par, but went on to shoot an 81 and finish in a tie for 11th place at eight over par.
